Kripkenstein: Rule and Indeterminacy ABSTRACT: Indeterminacy theories, such as Wittgenstein's and Kripke's indeterminacy principle on rules and language and Quine's indeterminacy of radical translation, raise some fundamental questions on our knowledge and understanding. In this paper we try to outline and interpret Wittgenstein's and Kripke's indeterminacy, and then compare it to some other related theories on indeterminacy of human thinking, such as raised by Hume, Quine, and Goodman. Quine's indeterminacy differs from Wittgenstein's in several aspects. First, Wittgenstein and Kripke's indeterminacy applies to a single individual in isolation and this indeterminacy disappears when the single person is brought into a wider community. Thus, this indeterminacy is only logically possible or hypothetical. Second, in Quine's problem, two translation manuals are distinguishable; while Wittgenstein's hypotheses, such as 'plus' and 'quus' and many others, are indistinguishable for the subject's past and the subject would never aware of the distinctions. Third, in Wittgenstein's view, whether a member follows the rules or not can be determined by 'outward criterion'. Quine's indeterminacy denies the existence of such 'outward criterion' for his two translation manuals. Goodman's hypothesis of 'grue' is quite different from the above two indeterminacy in terms of both objective of introducing the concept and the usage of it. Goodman's issue is to search for the rules in screening out 'bad' assumptions in induction. This induction issue is not indeterminacy of Wittgenstein's skeptic arguments or Quine's radical translation. Wittgenstein and Kripke's conclusion that that rules are brute facts seems to be questionable. Form of life is one of Wittgenstein's key concepts in his theory on rules and is linked to rules in some crucial ways. A community cannot agree on arbitrary rules and rules other than some highly selected ones cannot bind a community together. What a community agree or disagree is not an arbitrary game. Kripke presents Wittgenstein's theory on rules in his book Wittgenstein on Rules and Private Language. The topic is difficult and the presentation seems to inherit some characteristics of the original work, which "is not presented in the form of a deductive argument with definitive theses as conclusions,..." Public Speaking Self-Reflection Essay

In order for public speaking to become a skill, there are a few areas in which I need to improve to make it a suitable strength. Public speaking is not a weakness for me but I would like to transform it into one of my strengths. During my two minute presentation, I found that in order to do this I need to improve my ability to perform long speeches without hesitation, maintain eye contact, and be energetic in front of an audience showing more overview what topic I am discussing. In class I plan to work on take the steps of improving my verbal communication in front of my peers. While talking I plan to avoid using filler words that will drag a speech on and draw less interest from my audience. Being able to talk among my peers by keeping good eye contact on them at all times. By doing this it allows me the freedom to walk around and not be completely immobile when giving a speech. Understanding how to organize my work to have a solid overview on what I will be saying when presenting. With this class I hope it takes me to a whole new level on how to talk to people and how to control my emotions when in front of any audience regardless who it is. By allowing myself this sense of understand and awareness will help give me a sense of calmness giving me the ability to stand up and say what I need to say when giving a speech or if I am in a crowd listening to someone speak to offer my views on what is being said. In order for myself to improve my weak areas to accomplish my goals I will have to do the following: first write a speech and review it, next go over the speech many times in a place I feel safe performing the speech. After this find a mirror, use this to help reduce my fear when speaking in front of people. If this doesn’t work for me I can always use my family to help me. This will be continued to repeat itself until I felt I was ready to give my p resentation. Once I have accomplished improving my shortcomings will have the tools needed to be successful in any  job related to my career field.

James Kilgore believe to have found the solution in his book , "Understandi ng Mass Incarceration : A People's Guide to the Key Civil Rights Struggle of Our Time". He defines mass incarceration as "one of this country's key strategies for addressing problems of poverty, inequality, unemployment, racial conflict, citizenship, sexua lity, and gender, as well as crime. Hence, when we talk about mass incarceration, we are not speaking only of prison cells or the War on Drugs. A philosophy, a history, and a trail of profit and investment lurk behind the statistics.Ultimately , mass incarc eration is about opportunitynew opportunities for profit and political power for some and the denial of opportunity to others, largely poor people of color". Kilgore says that "campaigns against draconian dru g prosecutions, mobilizations to "ban the b ox" on employment applications for those with felony convictions, efforts to block jail construction in large urban centers and small Midwestern towns" (Kilgore 5 ) will all represent paths to undermining or fundamentally altering mass incarceration. Kilg ore first wants to campaign against draconian drug prosecutions. "Prosecution of drug cases has stood at the heart of both the expansion of the prison population and the philosophical shift to a more punitive system since the late 1970s. While the sentenci ng laws formed a crucial part of the implementation of mass incarceration, the chief vehicle to put those laws into effect " the war on drugs (Kilgore 39). "Moreover, virtually all aspects of the War on Drugs were and are heavily racialized. Violent raids on suspected drug operations were disproportionately targeted at working- class African American and Latino communities that were already impoverished by high rates of unemployment and declining systems of education and social services" which just happen to be the two races who are also highly represented in the prison system to this day (Kilgore 56).Kilgore believe that drug prosecutions should be only result in jail time if they are violent, Drug prosecut ions have been proven to be racially motivated. "B lacks and whites use marijuana at about the same rate, but Blacks are four to five times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession." the ACLU study found that in every single state Blacks had higher arrest rates than whites for marijuana possessi on. ( Kilgoe 67). Kilgore and Jacobson have a similar stance on this argument and I agree with them both. If a drug charge is not violent, there should be a focus on the root of the problem and rehabilitation rather than throwing the person in jail. Second ly, Kilgore calls to "ban the box" on employment applications for those with felony convictions. "As part of screening for criminal background, many employers ask candidates to check "the box" on job applications if they have ever been convicted of a crime ."(Kilgore 75). Kilgore argues that this box discriminates against people who admit to having a criminal record, often leading to their disqualification from the selection process. "As a result of these concerns, campaigns against the box have resulted in a number of cities, counties, and states passing "Ban the Box" measures" which outlaw the use of the question about criminal background on job applications and usually permit the employer to ask about criminal background only once a job offer is on the tab le .( Kilgore 78). This affects mass incarceration because if an former inmate is released from jail and doesn't find a job they may be forced back until the lifestyle that got them in trouble in the first place. I agree with Kilgore opinion to ban the box. This only helps someone discriminate and eliminate people during the hiring process. If a person is well equipped and favored for a job, only then should the employer be notified of their criminal history. This at least give people a fighting chance for jo bs rather being kicked out in the elimination process. Compare 3 Ancient Greek Statues essays The ancient Greek culture is known for its advances in math, art, and architecture. In Greek times there where many statues of humans mostly of men who where worshiped as Gods or Kings and sometimes both. The statues where often depicted nude so that the world could see their perfect bodies. Three statues that display various periods and ideals in Greek culture are the Kouros statue (600 B.C), the Spear Bearer (450-440 B.C.) also known as Doryphoros and was crafted by Polykleitos, and Dying Gaul by Peramon (230-220 B.C). Although at first glace these statues may appear qualitatively the same, each statue was carefully crafted to serve a purpose during the period of time in which it was made. The Egyptian style Greek Kouros was the earliest of the three sculptures. It was carved in 600 B.C. The Greek statues Spear Bearer (Doryphoros) and Dying Gaul where carved somewhere around 450-440 B.C. and 230-220 B.C. respectively. Each sculpture was carved from white marble and is a life size representation. Both the Spear Bearer and Dying Gaul statues are actually copies of the original statues. Both statues where originally made of bronze and not marble. Many of the Greek statues from this time period where made of bronze, but bronze was expensive and thats why many of them where carved from marble. Although we do not know who created the copies, the original Spear Bearer was made by a man by the name of Polykleitos. The original bronze Dying Gaul is a copy after a statue by Peramon. The original artist of the Kouros statue is unknown, but many similar statues where made in this style during early Greek times and served funerary purposes.
